The Impact of Appreciative Inquiry: Perspectives from Indian Organizations by Mr. K. K. Verma,Dr. Hardik Shah and Mr. Piyush Dwivedi
Abstract: Most OD approaches are problem-centered. They identify a problem or set of problems, and then look for a solution. Appreciative Inquiry (AI) accentuates the positive. Rather than looking for problems to fix, this approach seeks to identify the opportunities, unique qualities, and special strengths of an organization, which can be built on to improve performance. In other words, it focuses on an
organization’s success rather than on its problems. Since it was conceptualized in the late 1980s as a research methodology and change paradigm, the technique of AI has proved to be highly effective for capturing the positive features of an organization or social system and energizing the members to strive for higher levels of performance. The paper is the outcome of the study undertaken by the Academy of
Human Resources Development (AHRD) and Indian Society for Applied Behavioural Science (ISABAS) to study the AI perspectives and includes the evolution of thoughts, assumptions, principles, process changes and practices brought home by the practitioners on the subject of AI for organizational development through elucidation of the theory, principles, methods, domain and successful applications
of this approach. The outcome is indicative of the trend that AI practitioners have started using AI for acquiring know-how and building upon what works in organizations through AI through collective wisdom, knowledge and capacity to cause change as well as exploring variety of applications in regards to organizational change in different processes for overall organizational effectiveness.
